Cavities (dental decay) can present themselves in many ways. Occasionally, there is sensitivity to temperature, chewing, or even to nothing at all. The tooth or area may have a dull ache and may gradually get worse over time.
There may be no pain or sensitivity. You may notice darkened spots on your teeth. It is important to see your dentist here at The Dental Center if you suspect you have a cavity. In this case, you should call us right away for an appointment so we can determine the best treatment possible for you.
Cavities or a broken tooth may be treated in a few different ways depending upon the amount of tooth and root structure that may be involved.
In most cases, the area will be numbed and then a filling or crown will be placed. Occasionally, if the decay or fracture is extensive, a root canal or extraction may be needed. Your diagnosis and treatment will be explained to you thoroughly at your dental visit.Cavities are formed by tooth break-down that may occur due to bacteria on the teeth that thrive on sugar and can attack weakened enamel (the hard-outer surface of the tooth). Acidic foods and beverages may also contribute by making the enamel more penetrable to bacteria.
Cavities may be prevented by avoiding sugary and acidic foods and drinks. You should also brush 2 times a day, floss daily, and possibly use a fluoride mouth-rinse. It is also important to maintain regular dental check-ups and cleanings.
The Dental Center welcomes new patients and we want you to have the best care possible. Call us at (319) 365-0534 and we would be happy to take care of you.
